The Good Samaritan

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Title : The Good Samaritan
Author : Vaughan "Sluggs" Cooper
Contact info : N/A
Homepage : N/A
Date of release : 16th December 2005
Version : 1
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Description:

It's dark, then again it usually is around this time. I have had the
sudden urge to go out and find something to do, whatever that may be
and wherever that may take me...

It's time to begin...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"You have found a new Quest!"

Scattered around the City are quests, waiting to be discovered. Once
all quests are complete, the objective: "Proceed South through the
City" will check off, completing that objective...

Quests range from taking an item, found in a crate, to a specific
location and others may require the re-directing of mail! Note: Some
quests may require a little thought as you may not be given specific
instructions for that particular quest.

"Violence is the trademark of an Amateur"

This mission includes a "Body Count" feature. During quests, you have
a limited body count, amount depends on the difficulty. One knockout
or kill will raise the tally by 1. Too many bodies and you'll fail the
mission. (You will have in-game notification to remind you of this)
Once you have completed your quests, you are free to do as you please!

"You are being observed by the Keepers" (Expert only)

The Keepers are watching you. You still have ties with the Keepers and
they need to be able to trust you. A few have been posted around the
City to keep an eye on you. If they start finding bodies, you will
fail the mission. If they see you, they will investigate, keeping a
small distance away. Once you have completed your quests, this no
longer applies.

Timer on "Hard" difficulty...

You have 30 minutes in which to complete all quests. Failing to do so
will fail the mission. You will have an in-game announcement every 5
minutes. If you miss an announcement, you can always check the clocks
for the current time. The mission begins at 10:30 PM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Time Limit: 30 Minutes.

Maximum body count allowed: 3 bodies.
Keepers.

Other changes won't be addressed here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hints & Tips:

Don't mess with Electricity! You could kill yourself or someone else!

Look at the source of the problem.

Take notes! It is easy to forget a previous quest. Press (M) "Map" to
write notes.

At least one Vine/Water arrow is essential for the completion of all
quests.

Some things may not function, or be available, until the message: "You
have found a new Quest!" appears. You may need to re-visit a previous
area to continue a quest.

If you wish to fully explore the City, leave the loot objective until
you are ready to complete the mission. If you wish to find all the
loot available, then complete the loot objective first.

Use DarkLoader if you have it, otherwise extract .zip file into your
main Thief 2 folder.

Note: If you intend on extracting the .zip file, please make a backup
of the following files first, as they will be overwritten...

Thief2\00000409.256
Thief2\Movies\death.avi

"I've extracted the .zip file into my Thief 2 folder, how do i remove
it after playing?"

To un-install, remove the following folders & files from your main
Thief2 directory:

bitmap
books
fam
intrface
mesh
obj
schema
snd
strings
miss17.gam
miss17.mis

Copy death.avi back into the movies folder, and 00000409.256 back into
the main folder.

Custom scripts not required - It's all done using magic!

This mission features many ambient sounds. For the best results, raise
the ambient setting in the sound settings all the way up. This mission
also features many effects and lots of detail. If it runs a little
slow on your machine, try turning the sky detail to "Low" and/or lower
the screen resolution.

If you have any problems playing Thief 2, try opening up user.cfg and
remove the semicolon from the following line:

;safe_texture_manager

If you can't view the map, read books/scrolls or quit the current
mission, try raising the screen resolution.

NVidia owners:

You SHOULD, be able to see the stars in this mission!

Sound:

This mission, unfortunately, does not support EAX. Unless you have a
card that supports EAX, not including Motherboards with on-board
sound, there's really no need to enable hardware sound.

Thief 2 CD:

In order for everything to work correctly, you must have your Thief 2
CD in the drive if you have a minimum install.

Other:

Turn out the lights! Thief missions are generally dark and if you have
a light shining on your monitor, you may not be able to see much! If
you don't want to sit around in the dark, you may need to raise the
gamma a little in the settings menu.

As with all games, take breaks whilst playing. If you start to get a
headache, as i often do but that's from designing levels, do something
else.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Construction:

Base : The default cube! Wot? Yep, i built from it! (It was supposed to be a testing mission but magically turned into a full-blown one, again!)
Mission size : Ultramicroscopic
Build time : Aeons
Smallest grid used : 10
System : First 1.5 months using a crappy old Pentium 233,
the rest was built on an Athlon 64 3000+
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Bugs:

Water: AI falling into the water and drowning will raise the body
count tally. There's not much i can do about this, blame the AI!

New quest sound: May be blocked out by a previous VO sound.

Mission time announcement: May not be shown everytime. (Use the clocks
to check the current time) The mission begins at 10:30 PM.

Ladders: Climbing onto ladders, straight from the water, can produce
a sound bug. You may not be able to hear your footsteps whilst
climbing them or hear splashing sounds whilst wading through the water
afterwards.

Clocks: Various framerates can make the clocks run slower or faster.

Sky details: Setting the sky detail to "Low" then "High" may result in
the loss of the stars!

Others:

It is quite possible to get your feet stuck underneath some of the
models! Try jumping around like a demented Frog to free yourself!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A message from the author:

This mission is really just a showcase for my new objects and textures
for mission developers to use. Although today, there's more Thief
objects around than there ever was, there's always room for new
resources.

Apart from Chases Liquid Glue, which i'm sure no longer exists, all

This level includes textures that are the property of Remedy
Entertainment Ltd., and can be used only as long as the work is
recognized as original artwork by Remedy, and no financial profit is
gained in the process. Other textures were taken from various free
texture sites on the web... Huge thanks to all of you who made them
and the sites for hosting them. Your work is appreciated.

Developers:

You may extract the custom models/textures for use in your own
Thief/System Shock 2 missions, this excludes DedX. You may use this
mission as a base for your own Thief project. You may use the custom
gamesys and you may create multibrushes from the map. Please remember
to give me credit. Note: Some models/textures also use original
Thief 2 textures.

Other uses require permission from me, when back online. If you use
any of the other resources found in this FM, don't forget to credit
that author.

All custom stuff found in this FM can also be found in the custom
gamesys, under Miss17Stuff. You can also find lots of other new stuff,
not included in the mission!

Psst... Seek out the "Goodies" folder for secret developer's stuff!

This level is not supported by Looking Glass Studios or Eidos
Interactive.

"DromEd may crash on you, and it may not always be your fault"

May crash on you? Pff!
