Q: I've installed T2X, now how do I start it?
A: To play T2X, simply use the shortcut on the desktop or in the Start Menu
if you created one during installation. There is also a small loader program named t2x.exe which can be used to start the game.
If you do not have a shortcut to launch T2X, you will need to create one
that points to the "thief2.exe" and point the "Start In" parameter to the
T2X directory.
Example...
Target: "C:\Games\Thief2\thief2.exe"
Start In: "C:\Games\Thief2\t2x"
Q: The original Thief 2 game keeps loading and not T2X.
A: First check that T2X was correctly installed. Look inside your thief2
directory and you should see a directory called t2x. If this directory is
missing then try reinstalling t2x. If t2x is installed correctly, be sure
you have a "T2X shortcut" set up correctly. The shortcut need to point to
the thief2.exe, but "Start in" the t2x directory.
Example...
Target: "C:\Games\Thief2\thief2.exe"
Start In: "C:\Games\Thief2\t2x"
Q: Can I play other fan missions with T2X installed?
A: Yes, the installation will not interfere with fan missions and vice-versa.
Q: When playing T2X I have found that files from a Fan Mission are being used (including map files). How do I fix this?
A: This is most likely due to T2X being installed while a Fan Mission was loaded.
Thief2 should be in an original state before installing T2X. Use your mission
loader to restore Thief2 to its original state and reinstall T2X.
Q: Do I need any special codecs installed to watch the cutscenes?
A: Yes, the VP3 Codec is required. If you did not install the codec during the installation of T2X, you can manually install it by running the VP3_Codec executable found in the "\t2x\codec\" directory.
Q: How do I uninstall T2X?
A: You can uninstall T2X by running the "uninstall" executable or by simply deleting the T2X directory.
Q: None of the briefings or cutscenes are working. What's going on?
A: This is a known WinXP bug where the codec becomes corrupt. Please visit the Thief Technical FAQ for a solution to this problem.
Q: All I'm seeing is a black screen. How do I fix this?
A: Please visit the Thief Technical FAQ for a solution to this problem.
Q: Thief crashes with an error about Direct3D Texture Memory.
A: Please visit the Thief Technical FAQ for a solution to this problem.
Q: What exactly does the T2X.exe file do?
A: The T2X.exe program works just like the shortcuts to Thief2 & Thief2X. Besides displaying a pretty picture, the program will determine its location and then start thief2 either in the t2x directory (to play t2x) or inside the thief2 directory (to play the original game) depending on which button you click.
Q: How can I run T2X without using the T2X.exe file?
A: Please refer to the topic: * I've installed T2X, now how do I start it? *
Q: What happens if I mess up the darkinst.cfg file? How do I restore it?
A: With T2X v1.1 there is no editing of the original darkinst.cfg file (apart from a copy made during the installation process). If for some reason the darkinst.cfg file was messed up, there is an identical file in the parent thief2 directory called "install.cfg". Simply open this and copy the contents into your darkinst.cfg file and save.
Q: Can I use any textures/AI/sounds from T2X in my own FM's?
A: Please refer to the Legal Disclaimer found in the T2X directory.
Q: I'm not getting any text or sounds with the German / French version.
A: Install the v1.1 patch which will make all versions "english" by default.
Q: During installation i received an error saying "Failed to create custom Darkinst file". What is the deal?
A: This could have been caused by a few different things...
1) T2X was not installed correctly. Uninstall then reinstall T2X and pay close attention to the installation path. T2X needs to be installed in the same location as Thief2. The error in this case is occurring due to a critical config file not being found.
2) The file "install.cfg" has the "read-only attribute" set. The installer needs to rename and modify this file so that Thief2 knows where to locate the T2X resources. Remove the "read-only attribute" on the file and reinstall T2X.
3) You may need administrator privileges in order to install T2X correctly. This is due to the installer needing to modify a critical config file as stated above.
